TO THE EDITOR:
My friends from home have always asked me"" ""What is a Tar Heel?"" I finally have an answer.
A real Tar Heel is one who loves UNC and what it stands for. They are men and women who walk by the Old Well in spring and feel the magic of the quad at dawn.
A real Tar Heel is one who has experienced the sweet taste of victory and the bitterness of defeat" yet remains to sing the alma mater all the same.
A real Tar Heel spends hours in the library mastering subjects then enjoys the evenings making new memories with old friends never to be forgotten.
A real Tar Heel dances for the kids builds houses for strangers and tutors kids less privileged than himself.
A real Tar Heel considers the feelings of others while sticking up for what he believes in.
A real Tar Heel fights injustice and realizes that his is a world beyond the Old Well and the Bell Tower that one day he will enter.
A real Tar Heel leaves this place to make a difference in the world only to return to the place called blue heaven.
A real Tar Heel has a bond with those who have gone before and those who will come after.
To someone outside this university I cannot explain what a real Tar Heel is. It is a feeling that one has to experience by being here and interacting day in and day out with all Tar Heels wherever they might be from.
