The North Carolina volleyball team won the first match of the Carolina
Volleyball Classic in exciting fashion Friday, topping Tennessee in
five sets, 20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 16-14.
After the Tar Heels struggled through the first two sets, coach Joe
Sagula made two changes, inserting sophomore Kaylie Gibson at libero
and freshman Emily McGee at outside hitter. Gibson logged 21 digs on
the match, and McGee recorded 13 kills in addition to 13 digs.
Senior middle hitters Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland and Heather Brooks
combined for 29 kills in 59 attempts, but the star of the match was
sophomore setter Erica Behm, who set two career highs with 59 assists
and 15 digs.
The fifth set was tightly contested to a tie at 14-14. Freshman
Heather Henry hit a sharp cross-court shot to set up a match-ending
kill by Hanson-Tuntland.
