The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

I would like to say on behalf of myself and others that the comments were not meant to harm the reputation of the University or its students.

While enjoying a night out, we were asked to speak to a NYT reporter. He said the article would highlight women’s academic achievements. After being primed by the journalist and several drinks, we were willing to provide Mr. Williams with exactly what he was looking for.

However, many comments were manipulated. People interpreted the article to mean we’re only looking for “MRS. Degrees,” but we all said we weren’t here to find a husband, it would just be nice to go on an occasional date.

We were portrayed as lonely, pathetic women who were unable to find boyfriends, yet the few single women present showed no dismay about being single. We are hard-working women with a high degree of self-respect attending UNC to obtain an excellent education to help us excel in the future, boyfriend or not.

Many students used the article to shine a negative light upon the Greek system. Yes, the majority of students interviewed were sorority members, but interviewees were chosen at Mr. Williams’ discretion. We detailed our experiences with dating at UNC, they were not meant to be representative of every woman at the University. The Greek system often fosters an environment that lends itself to dating within, but we hardly restrict ourselves to only fraternity men.

As part of a community that encourages outreach, leadership and support, I want to assure you that we were also caught off-guard by the context of the article.
