The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

It is natural to become disillusioned by the tenor of student elections.

Candidates often make grandiose claims, spam our inboxes and block our paths through the Pit.

This frustration is rooted in the dissonance between what campaigns claim student government can do and what it’s actually done.

We support Shruti Shah for student body president because she represents a more authentic approach to student government. Shah’s approach is one that is honest about what it can and cannot accomplish.

Electing Shah would be a step toward addressing many students’ frustrations with the executive branch and student government.

Shah is the candidate most engaged with the local Chapel Hill community on issues ranging from the environment to combating homelessness.

We believe her vision for student government will enable it to partner with service, cultural and political organizations on campus to harness the energy and passion of Carolina’s amazing student body instead of duplicating its efforts.

She’ll also be a strong voice on the Board of Trustees, representing students on tuition and financial aid policies as the University faces the continuing fallout of the recession.

One administration will never be able to solve all of the problems on campus, but Shah will focus on the issues student government is best suited to solve.
