The varsity women’s soccer team took their skills from the field to the court Tuesday night to win during the third and final week of the intramural women’s basketball regular season.
The team Tom Sanders, composed entirely of varsity soccer players, beat the Dream Team 39-34. Both teams were 2-0 going into the game.
The team is named “in honor and respect for” Director of Women’s Soccer Operations Tom Sander, captain Maria Lubrano said.
To celebrate the win, Hannah Daly did pull-ups. She celebrated a halftime lead by sprinting back and forth down the court.
Her teammates laughed, telling Daly that she’s on a “never-ending ascension,” as their coach always told them.
Although Tom Sanders consistently led in the game, Dream Team was rarely far behind.
Though they fell 10 points behind early in the second half, Dream Team nearly came back, coming within two points of Tom Sanders.
Ali “The Hawk” Hawkins, so nicknamed by her teammates, said her favorite part of the intramural games is seeing the opposing team work as hard as they do.
“It’s the same reason we play soccer,” she said.
The team is encouraged to play an intramural sport of their choosing during the offseason, Meghan Klingenberg said, and every player on Tom Sanders played basketball in either middle or high school.
“We play enough soccer during the year,” Lubrano said, on why they chose basketball.
Intramural basketball is so much fun because it allows the team to be competitive but still be relaxed, Hawkins said, a luxury they normally cannot enjoy playing soccer.
But the team could not be more optimistic going into the intramural basketball playoffs.
“We slaughter them all like the pigs they are,” Hawkins said, her entire team laughing.
