UNC-system President Erskine Bowles announced Friday that he had chosen who would replace the system's outgoing chief financial officer.
Ernest Murphrey, now the associate vice chancellor for financial services at N.C. State University, will assume current Vice President for Finance Rob Nelson's duties on April 5, according to a press release from the system's central administration office.
Murphrey said he has worked at various UNC-system institutions since 1977, aside from eight years he spent working for the Board of Regents for the Georgia university system.
"I think it will be a relatively smooth transition because I've worked in the system for many years," Murphrey said.
In addition to NCSU, Murphrey also worked at Elizabeth City State University and UNC-Chapel Hill and is a UNC-CH alumnus.
Nelson announced in February that he would be retiring.
The vice president for finance oversees a $7.4 billion budget and all financial matters for the UNC system. He also assists the Board of Governors' budget and finance committee and works closely with other senior administrators in the central office.
