TO THE EDITOR:
While we applaud the University for attempting to hold its students to a higher academic standard by creating a new GPA policy for the Dean’s List, we feel UNC should address some flaws with the recent change in requirements.
If students take 15 or more credit hours in a semester, it illustrates their motivation and work ethic, which UNC should reward by recognizing the additional effort it takes to maintain a 3.2 GPA in that situation. To be frank, more credit hours requires more work. Students who take 12 credit hours, while still motivated, have more time to devote to individual classes and can more easily achieve a 3.5 GPA.
It seems unfair to hold students to the same standards, regardless of whether they’re taking 12 or 18 credit hours. Students have more of an incentive to take more credit hours in a semester if they feel that they will still have a chance to be on the Dean’s List, even if they achieve a slightly lower GPA.
