Athletes give back to the University in many ways

TO THE EDITOR:

In response to the letter, “Athletes must see value in giving back to UNC” (April 20), I would like to say that UNC athletes give a tremendous amount to the community and the school.

Athletes commit time and energy to being great. By doing so, they promote UNC’s image nationally, increase sales of UNC merchandise and give fans here something to be excited about.

This school makes millions from those sales that it puts toward general scholarships and improving the University. The athletic department also gives back above and beyond its athletic contributions, through programs like Carolina Outreach that seek out the opportunity to help others in our local community.

Most student athletes will not sign a lucrative sports contract, but all of them give back to UNC in one form or another.
