TO THE EDITOR:
Over the weekend, Ndamukong Suh, the imposing defensive star of the University of Nebraska football team, demonstrated a commitment to giving back through a generous pledge of a donation of $2.6 million to the university. His moving statement announcing his gift acknowledges all that his coaches, classmates and faculty have done for him over the past five years.
Why have we not seen such commitment from UNC athletes? Do coaches not instill the value of the responsibility to give back? Do UNC athletes not understand and appreciate the contributions that the university community has made to their success?
In the larger game of life, Mr. Suh’s understanding of his philanthropic responsibilities exceeds any of his remarkable football accomplishments and hopefully will lead others to follow in his substantial and generous footsteps.
