The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

Today I read your article on the OS1 cleaning system and I felt compelled to respond (“New operating system debated for UNC housekeepers,” April 27). My concern is that the small number of individuals who have not been using the new method of cleaning are representing all of us.

The truth is there is a number of us who love what we now do. It has proven to be easier on us in a number of ways.

One, it has relieved us from doing everything alone. Now we have a team working together for a common goal. Now we have a group helping each other and taking ownership of the building as a whole. Also, our equipment is lighter and designed to keep us from bending or getting on our knees. The products are green-friendly and safer for us, our customers and our environment.

We also have opportunities for advancement we didn’t have before. Are there things that need tweaking? Sure, but keep in mind that we are the first in the nation to try this in a dorm situation.

And also keep in mind that the same problems and concerns being spoken on by a few were occurring in zone cleaning. Some of the worst mold I’ve ever seen was when we were all doing zone cleaning.

There are a lot of positive things about OS1. Too numerous to speak on in this one letter. We would just like to say don’t let the voices of a few speak for us all. We are happy and grateful for the things this new style of cleaning has created. Not only for us, but for our customers. You the students.
