TO THE EDITOR:
During the summer, when the campus population lessens and the pace of campus life slows somewhat, the inclination might be to let down our guard where campus safety is concerned.
UNC Public Safety urges you remain vigilant, however: to take every safety precaution and to continue to educate yourself as to what programs and resources are available to the campus community.
A high number of visitors frequent UNC during the summer, including the families of prospective students and campers, who aren’t familiar with campus traffic patterns. With lane reductions scheduled on several campus roadways and weather conducive to walking and bicycling even after dark, we ask that motorists and pedestrians alike pay extra attention to pedestrian safety. Call our Pedestrian Safety Hotline at 919-843-PEDS (7337) with specific concerns.
Larcenies still occur during the summer months. Those bringing bicycles to campus are urged to lock them to designated bicycle racks using a U-shaped bicycle lock, and those recreating outside should not leave backpacks or property unattended.
Though the Point-to-Point Express buses don’t run during the summer months, those needing after-dark transportation between official campus locations can still arrange for a ride by calling 962 – P-TO-P (7867).
Balmy summer nights may be perfect for walking through campus, but remember to use well-lit walkways and walk in groups.
Make note of safety tips and other resources on the Alert Carolina website at alertcarolina.unc.edu, and learn more about programs like Rave Guardian.
Finally, partner with UNC Public Safety in helping to maintain a safe campus environment. Use a police callbox or dial 9-1-1 on your cellphone to report any and all suspicious activity. Join with us in our goal of providing a safe and enjoyable summer for the entire campus community.
