Plan your weekend with free, local arts events

Chapel Hill and Carrboro offer a variety of free events during the weekend, including gatherings at the new FRANK art gallery.
Chapel Hill and Carrboro offer a variety of free events during the weekend, including gatherings at the new FRANK art gallery.

TGI Thursdays at FRANK

Every Thursday, a casual gathering of artists, art lovers, interested passers-by and guest speakers enjoy artists’ shows and free refreshments.

Cheese, crackers and wine are provided by the 55 artists gallery members at the Franklin Street gallery, which lasts from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Gallery Director Barbara Rich said the event started as a potluck for members, but now it is open to the public.

“It pays for itself,” she said.

All of the front show artwork for June and July are related to bees, and some events reflect the art.

Rich said the theme is interesting and unique as it relates to summer.

Tonight, Elaine O’Neil is speaking on textile art, specifically about her intricate appliqué work.

Fridays on the Porch

The Carolina Inn’s annual fundraiser “Bluegrass for Babies” takes place June 11.

N.C. Children’s Hospital will receive 25 percent of the proceeds.

Carolina Inn Marketing Manager Alison D’Agostino said this is one of the hotel’s most popular Fridays on the Front Porch event.

Every Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. April through October, locals, visitors and students gather to kick off their weekends.

The event features live bluegrass music, a Southern buffet picnic, drink specials and comfortable seating.

While there is no cover charge, the buffet costs $12 per person.

Big Fat Gap, a regular performer for the event, plays this week.

Garden tours on Saturday

Free tours of the Display Gardens at the N.C. Botanical Garden take place every Saturday at 10 a.m.

The gardens offer a variety of displays and settings in which to view native plants.

Publications and Publicity Coordinator Laura Cotterman said the tours are a good opportunity to learn about Southeastern plants and how to tend to them.

Behind-the-scenes tours of the recently opened Education Center are also offered at 1:30 p.m. Saturdays.

Cotterman said these tours provide information about sustainable green buildings.

The tours are led by trained community volunteers and are designed to be informative and entertaining.
