Rising North Carolina senior linebacker Quan Sturdivant was cited with possession of marijuana on Saturday in Albemarle, according to police reports.
Sturdivant had less than half an ounce in his possession when he was pulled over at Bojangles’ at 11:15 a.m., reports state.
He is from nearby Oakboro and played high school football at West Stanly.
“We are disappointed in Quan’s actions over the weekend. This is not the type of behavior we expect from our student-athletes,” North Carolina football coach Butch Davis said.
“In addition to the outcome of the legal process, he also will face disciplinary action from within the football program beginning immediately.”
Sturdivant, who appears on the promo for UNC’s season opener against LSU on tarheelblue.com is listed by ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. as the top senior inside linebacker for the 2011 NFL Draft and will likely play an integral role on this year’s team.
His court date is set for Aug. 2.
