The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

Avid followers of the DTH may recall a letter (“Coaches represent UNC well during tough times,” Mar. 1) I wrote at the end of basketball season where I thanked Coach Hatchell and Coach Williams for the class and grace with which they represented my university (class of 1994) even during a lackluster year in terms of wins and losses.

I was proud of them for that. However, I am shocked that the football program has emerged to be as dirty, corrupt and embarrassing as we now understand it to be. Coach Blake resigned? Why not fire him immediately with no severance? Thanks for all the trouble and mess. Marvin Austin is suspended indefinitely? Thanks for your role in tarnishing the reputation of UNC.

Coach Davis and Mr. Baddour, we are not Miami. We are not Kentucky. We are not the University of Southern California. Thankfully, we are UNC! Winning is important, but our reputation is more important. Excellence and class doesn’t only reflect what is on the scoreboard, but is also exemplified by our reputation in the United States.

Perhaps we should give you both the benefit of the doubt that you didn’t know about our issues. If that is truly the case, then there should be some extraordinary things that you two can do to weed out the bad in our football program. Please, take care of my university.
