North Carolina associate head football coach John Blake resigned Sunday evening in a prepared statement released by the University.
In the press release, which also included statements from Butch Davis and athletic director Dick Baddour, Blake said that he felt his “presence has become a distraction to my family and to this great University, too.”
Blake, who was also the defensive line coach and recruiting director, steps down amidst speculation about his part in the NCAA investigation. He was linked to agent Gary Wichard by several sources, and Wichard called Blake a personal friend. Wichard is the agent of former Tar Heel Kentwan Balmer, who has close ties to now-suspended defensive tackle Marvin Austin.
Blake was brought in by Davis when Davis first got the job as UNC’s head coach to be the recruiting director. In that facility, he recruited many of the top-tier players to UNC, including Austin.
Davis and Blake were long-time colleagues, as the two worked together for the Dallas Cowboys as far back as 1993.
“Knowing John as I have over the years, it is clear that this was a difficult decision for him to make,” said Davis in his prepared statement. “I know how much John loves the players, coaching and the game of football. I am grateful for all of his hard work and effort in helping build this program.”
Baddour announced in his statement that Blake would be paid the rest of his paycheck for the season, which comes out to $74,500.

John Blake statement:
“While I have enjoyed my tenure at the University of North Carolina, it has become apparent to me over the course of the past few weeks that my presence has become a distraction to my family and to this great University, too. Consequently, I have determined that it is in the best interests of my family, the University community at large, and the Football Program for me to step down from my position as associate head football coach effective today, September 5, 2010.
