TO THE EDITOR:

What can we do to put ourselves on track for a better economy and more successful community? We can start by voting for the proposed County Sales and Use Tax on the ballot this November.

This small increase is less than a penny, but it means more jobs and better schools for our community starting next year.

The revenue from the proposed sales tax increase helps create jobs. It helps attract new businesses to Orange County, and it helps grow the ones already here. Better technology and updated classrooms help prepare our students to be competitive members of a global work force.

Improved libraries and emergency response times help make our communities better and safer places to live and do business. One-quarter cent is an additional 25 cents on a $100 purchase.

That’s a very small price for enhanced schools, libraries, EMS and strong, successful economic development.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber, the Hillsborough/Orange County Chamber, the Greater Chapel Hill Realtors Association, Orange County Justice United and a host of others have endorsed the tax through a campaign called the Campaign for Jobs and Schools.

Please join the board of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber and me in supporting jobs and schools in our community by voting for the County Sales and Use Tax.
