Assistant Chief of Chapel Hill Police Chris Blue will take on his new duties as chief of police Dec. 1 following the retirement of current Chief Brian Curran.

Town Manager Roger Stancil announced Monday that Assistant Chief of Chapel Hill Police Chris Blue has been selected as the town’s new police chief, according to a press release.

Blue, who will replace current chief Brian Curran when he retires Nov. 30, has held positions of assistant chief, captain, lieutenant, sergeant, patrol officer and crime prevention officer in the community services unit, the release states.

After Curran announced his retirement, Stancil informed the town council in June that he was considering looking within the police department for a replacement, and Blue began a assessment process, the release states.

During the assessment, Blue was critiqued and evaluated, specifically in areas like adaptable problem-solving, interpersonal development, leadership and operations management.

Blue will assume his new position Dec. 1.

The town will hold a press conference at 4:30 p.m. at Chapel Hill Town Hall where the announcement will formally be made.
