TO THE EDITOR:
Briefly, in response to Carrie Dobbins (“Do not forget the true meaning of Christmas,” Nov. 28): I admire your strong anti-capitalist rhetoric, but I would admonish you to not recommend anyone give change to “the man ringing the bell outside of Wal-Mart.”
The Salvation Army is a militant anti-GLBTQ organization that campaigned against decriminalizing homosexuality, expects gay people to be celibate for life and threatened to close their homeless shelters rather than treat gay people equally.
There are plenty of alternatives for your charity, however. If your pockets are heavy this holiday season, please consider this list of alternative organizations before throwing it all in those little red buckets: American Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam International, UNICEF or (probably best) your local homeless shelters.
