TO THE EDITOR:
After months of open-minded patience, I have canceled my subscription to the News & Observer. Sunday’s editorial castigating Chancellor Thorp has so many inaccuracies and inappropriate accusations that I can no longer tolerate the anti-Carolina bias that has fueled the News & Obsessor’s coverage of our football program.
No, broad support for Butch Davis is not based on the team’s record.
No, Holden Thorp does not pretend to predict the future: he bases his decisions on the factual evidence that is available, and he will adjust his decisions if the evidence changes.
No, our high standards in athletics have not been harmed.
No, neither Holden Thorp nor Dick Baddour have failed to acknowledge the gravity of the situation.
No, the Kenan Stadium expansion is not a private retreat for our sports boosters.
No, it has not been a winless season in Chapel Hill: our football program’s coaches, players, and staff have handled adversity and maintained an impressive record, and their diligent performance has the strong support of their fellow athletes, fellow students, and Carolina faculty, staff, and alumni.
