TO THE EDITOR:
What makes me proud to be a student at Carolina is the desire of our students to be active forces in shaping our campus environment. In this spirit I encourage all of you to be a part of a special event taking place today from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Hamilton 100, where students, workers, and community members will join together to learn about UNC’s history of worker struggles on campus and to discuss how students can support worker rights today.
Learn how Lenoir employees, with the help of students, went on strike in the 1960s and increased their wages and the wages of 5,000 other state employees. Hear firsthand accounts of how UNC housekeepers sued the University in the 1990s on issues of discrimination and won pay raises and recognition of their union.
Finally, learn about worker struggles happening today and talk with other students, campus workers, and community members about how students can help. Campus workers are a part of what makes our university great.
For our community to move toward a more just and equal Carolina, we must first learn where we’ve been. Come be a part of the movement!
