Butch Davis was a part of his fourth “Wide Right” in Florida State. Seminoles kicker Dustin Hopkins missed a game-winning field goal with seven seconds left, and North Carolina prevailed 37-35.
T.J. Yates became the first UNC quarterback ever to have two 400-yard passing games in his career, as he totaled 439 yards and three touchdowns against no interceptions.
The dramatic finish was set up when punter C.J. Feagles illegally kicked a ball on the UNC two-yard line with the Tar Heels holding a six point lead. The ensuing penalty gave Florida State the ball on the one-yard-line, and the Seminoles pounded it in.
Given the ball with 5:54 remaining down by a single point, Yates calmly took the Tar Heels all the way down the field. The drive stalled on the four-yard-line, and Casey Barth kicked what turned out to be the winning field goal.
On FSU’s ensuing kickoff, Greg Reid returned it to the UNC 45, giving the Seminoles prime field position. Six plays and 23 yards later, the stage was set for Hopkins’ fateful kick.
The win marks UNC’s sixth of the season, which means the Tar Heels are now bowl-eligible.
