TO THE EDITOR:
Nominations for the 2011 Carolina Chiron Award for Excellence in Teaching are now open.
In its third year, the Carolina Chiron Award will once again celebrate outstanding teaching at UNC. Randy Pausch’s well-known book and “Last Lecture” at Carnegie Mellon University in 2007 inspired students at UNC to create a fully student-run teaching award. The award recognizes a UNC professor or lecturer who goes above and beyond to make in- and out-of-class experiences phenomenal for his or her students and is invested in philanthropy or service to the greater community. The recipient of the award will give a lecture as though it is the last of his or her life, and should share information he or she considers most useful to students who are seeking to live life to the fullest, using the subject matter that he or she teaches in the classroom. In addition to a lecture and dessert gala, a monetary award will be split evenly between the honoree and a philanthropic project of his or her choice.
If an educator at UNC has helped shape you and your Carolina experience in the best possible way, nominate him or her for the Carolina Chiron Award. Visit http://chironaward.web.unc.edu for more information and the nomination form, which is due Feb. 1.
