The last Chancellor’s Open House was held Wednesday evening in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union.
Chancellor Holden Thorp applauded students’ commitment to public service both in the community and internationally.
“A lot of you have the folks in Japan on your mind,” he said. “I’ve been around for a lot of these things — 9/11, Haiti — and every time you see the campus mobilize. It’s an inspiration.”
Richard Harrill, director of the Campus Y, spoke about a new endeavor to assess community service efforts students are delivering in disenfranchised communities in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
He said the assessment process is important to ensure that service projects align with community needs.
Harrill also introduced the new Bonner Scholars Program aimed at providing work-study grants for students from disadvantaged communities to get involved in public service.
