The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

Regarding the article “Schools take on 5 percent budget cuts” of March 29, it’s important to iterate a few key points.

To enter the School of Education’s baccalaureate teaching programs, N.C. Teaching Fellows must meet the same admissions requirements as other students.

While the overall demand for elementary school teachers may not be as strong as it has been in recent years, demand for Carolina graduates is as mighty as ever. Graduates of our teaching programs regularly enjoy 100 percent job placement rates.

The School of Education is committed to helping provide the state of North Carolina with well-prepared teachers, school leaders and researchers committed to improving outcomes in our schools.

While we expect a small reduction in enrollment in one degree program, we expect increases in others. And we are managing our reorganization in a way that will allow us to quickly ramp up enrollment in the elementary education program when demand for increases again.

Deborah Eaker-Rich, Ph.D.

Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs

School of Education
