Dr. Rabinowitz respected by students of all majors

TO THE EDITOR:

I would like to share similar sentiments to those of Evan Ross in his letter titled “Dr. George Rabinowitz’ death a real loss for UNC,” (Mar. 21) as I, too, held Dr. Rabinowitz in high esteem as one of the greatest professors I have been lucky to meet and have as an instructor.

Rabinowitz was my instructor for POLI 100H during the spring semester of my freshman year, and after my experience with him and his amazing personality and instruction I registered for his POLI 412 course the following fall — which just so happened to coincide with the presidential elections of 2008. He was one of the kindest and friendliest professors I have ever met.

His personality and his enthusiasm for political science was infectious, even for a biology major like me.

His passing is an incredible loss for the Carolina community, but it is reassuring to know that he passed away while doing what he loved — conducting research with his wife in a beautiful country like Norway. It’s such a shame that future Tar Heels will never get to experience his unique teaching style and perspective on the politics that guide our great country and set it apart from others.

I pray that our University will come together to remember him and appreciate his incredible contributions to our academic community.

Thank you, Dr. Rabinowitz. You will not be forgotten.
