The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

Huge kudos to 2010 UNC Homecoming Queen Monica Doyle, who created, directed and so graciously hosted Saturday night an event called “A Night to Shine Prom” for local young adults with developmental disabilities.

At such a challenging time for our world, in fact the very evening we learned that our nation was at war in yet another foreign locale, this young Tar Heel used her visibility to deeply touch with kindness the lives of many people in her own community. She infused the Tar Heel spirit into the event by bringing along Rameses, an a cappella group and her own sorority sisters to join the fun.

Making this event a reality was clearly a labor of love for Monica — she collaborated with local agencies including the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Public Schools, Extraordinary Ventures and the Arc of Orange County.

Congratulations, Monica, for bringing a ton of happiness to a ton of your peers in Chapel Hill and for reminding us — particularly during March Madness — that Carolina Pride is not just about extraordinary achievement in sports!
