TO THE EDITOR:
As a parent and someone who feels our main responsibility to our future is to provide a future for our children regardless of their socioeconomic level, I am just floored by the GOP agenda to devastate our education system with drastic cuts. Our public schools, which the vast majority of children attend, are crucial to their ability to learn and to have bright futures.
Our public schools are already struggling with not enough funding to be able to have sufficient supplies, and most teachers do not really make that great of a salary in comparison to the amount of work and time they put into their jobs.
My sister-in-law has 25 special needs children in her classroom to teach by herself. They laid off her assistant due to the budget. That is crazy.
To close the Frank Porter Graham Child Care Center because of budget problems is just another example of where we are going. People, you need to really think hard about what is more important: your children, or funding a huge military budget and giving tax breaks to corporations and the top 2 percent of the richest people.
This is the wrong way to trim a budget.
This is a very self-destructive and heartless move.
