The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

I am writing this letter with utmost concern and conviction for the safety of students at UNC.

The incident at Morrison dorm on Monday morning is serious and grave. I am grossly disappointed with the choices that DPS made when deciding whether to activate Alert Carolina.

The system should have been activated to alert students on campus that there may be an armed suspect on campus. Granted, this may have caused some panic amongst students, but it would have been for their own safety. If this individual was brave enough to enter a dorm on University property and wield a gun against another student, what is stopping him from doing the same elsewhere on campus?

I do hope that there will be an institutional review of this system and this choice so that this error can and will not be made again, for our safety is at stake.

What is the point of having a multi-million dollar system if we are not going to use it when “an armed and dangerous person (is) on or near campus?”

Hopefully we will never be put in a position again where the use of Alert Carolina is necessary. But I hope that if there is a next time, our law enforcement will make a more conscientious decision and alert the students and staff of UNC.
