Patrick Thomas Akos, a professor in the UNC School of Education, was charged this afternoon on one count of felonious larceny of a motor vehicle and given citations for one count of reckless driving and six counts of hit and run.
Akos, 40, turned himself in this afternoon and was released on a written promise to appear in court at Hillsborough District Court at 2 p.m. Monday.
Orange County Emergency Services responded to a medical assistance call on Deerwood Court on April 1. During Akos’ treatment, he ran out of his home and drove an Orange County ambulance around the neighborhood, striking parked cars, a fire truck and a cable box.
He crashed the ambulance at the dead end of Emory Drive before being transported to UNC Hospitals.
The fire truck, worth about $400,000, had damage to three rear compartments, the rear step and all rear lights, Fire Chief Dan Jones said in an earlier interview.
Damage to the ambulance is estimated at $15,000, Police Capt. Jeff Clark said.
Clark could not comment on his mental state, but Akos’ arrest report lists him as not having consumed drugs or alcohol.
