TO THE EDITOR:
Here we are again, being reminded how scary and dangerous the world is. Armed criminals are coming to take away our freedom and replace it with fear.
We must stand together and fight back with weapons of our own.
Each time something happens, we hear the same argument: If armed student vigilantes had been on site, danger could have been prevented.
It’s true that the world can be a scary place, but if the armed robbers who entered Morrison were let in by a student and then encountered an unlocked door, what good would guns have done to prevent the threat?
Rather than focus on an isolated incident in which students faced potential danger, I prefer to remember the overwhelming number of instances in which nothing happened and I felt completely safe on campus.
I have always felt safe walking this campus, even though I frequently stray away from well-lit paths and high-traffic areas.
If we want to make our campus safer from threats like this recent one, we should start by making better decisions as students. Our actions are what enable criminals on an otherwise safe campus.
Let’s put the fear-based argument to rest and handle safety concerns without the introduction of more weapons to our campus.
