The Republican leadership on the N.C. House appropriations subcommittee on education has proposed a 15.5 percent cut for the UNC system for the next two fiscal years.
The budget proposal includes $447.6 million cut for the UNC system for the 2011-12 academic year as well as a reduction of $37.6 million in financial aid funding.
In the last three years, the system has already cut a total of $575 million, 23 percent in expenses and nearly 900 administrative positions.
The subcommittee members will propose amendments to the budget before a vote on the House floor, and representatives are expected to approve a proposal by April 21.
The Senate committee will then draft their own budget proposal for a vote. Both houses must settle on a budget to send to Gov. Bev Perdue’s desk to sign before the end of the fiscal year on July 1.
