TO THE EDITOR:
The response to the armed gunman on campus was completely unacceptable. Obviously, DPS failed to alert the students of UNC that there might be an armed gunman on campus. But more importantly, residents of Morrison were not told of what happened, either.
I live in Morrison, and the first I heard about this was from my friends, who read the DTH on Tuesday. Only on Wednesday did I get an email from housing detailing the incident. The fact that it took the housing department almost two days to inform the students is downright irresponsible and, frankly, very concerning.
Sure, there were signs all around Morrison telling us to lock our suite doors and not let strangers into the building, but without telling us the reason behind them, those signs are meaningless.
Students are always told to lock their doors and not let strangers into the building, so I doubt anyone really took this seriously.
The first move should have been to alert the Morrison community immediately, if not all residents of campus housing. I hope both the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Housing and Residential Education have learned some valuable lessons from this event.
