Carlos Somoano will be the next head coach at the University of North Carolina, athletic director Dick Baddour announced today.
Somoano had served as the top assistant to former head coach Elmar Bolowich for the nine years preceding Bolowich’s resignation Feb. 9 and as interim head coach afterward.
During his time at UNC, Somoano has helped recruit six top-10 recruiting classes, and was named 2010 South Region Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Prior to joining Bolowich’s staff, Somoano (pronounced Some-WAH-no) had worked in the same capacity at Virginia Commonwealth University for six years.
“We are thrilled to hire a coach of Carlos’ pedigree to lead our men’s soccer program,” Baddour said in a statement posted on TarHeelBlue.com. “Carlos has worked alongside Elmar Bolowich for the last nine years and has been an integral part of building this program into one of the nation’s best. He has consistently proven to be one of the sport’s finest recruiters as well as a great teacher of the game and I have the utmost confidence in his ability to continue the tradition of excellence that we have seen from our men’s soccer program.”
