TO THE EDITOR:
There’s been a lot of debate about whether Snoop Dogg should be able to perform at UNC. Personally, I’m not a big fan, but I believe it’s ridiculous that the University may stop him from performing.
For one, it’s a concert they didn’t have to organize — the students themselves took the initiative and won the concert. UNC has to pay nothing out of pocket and Electronic Arts is doing the majority of the work — we just have to provide the venue.
With regards to the issue surrounding Snoop’s songs, I find it a bit ludicrous. First, the claim that Snoop Dogg was guilty of sexual assault is simply untrue: The accuser dropped the case in 2005. Sure, it’d be naive of us to believe that he’s not someone with a past — firearm and marijuana charges make up a long criminal record — but if we aren’t going to allow anyone that’s made mistakes to perform, UNC won’t have anyone left for concerts.
I find it rather ironic that a school that’s supposed to be open minded and liberal may not allow a rapper to perform. Duke gets Lupe, UVa got Lady Gaga earlier this school year, even East Carolina University got Wiz Khalifa. Passion Pit is a cool band, but they do not have the wide appeal that other artists do. The one time we have a rather mainstream artist come to our school, the University may prevent it.
