Gov. Bev Perdue vetoed a bill today that would require women to wait 24 hours before having an abortion performed.
The Republican-backed legislation also mandates a counseling session and ultrasound services prior to the waiting period. If Perdue had signed the bill into law, N.C. would have become the ninth state to require counseling, an ultrasound and a waiting period before an abortion procedure.
Republican leaders have said they will consider override votes for bills vetoed by Perdue during a special legislative session for redistricting that convenes on July 13. The bill’s margin of passage was one vote short of a veto-proof majority in both the N.C. Senate and House before it was sent to Perdue’s desk.
Legislators might also seek to override Perdue’s veto of a measure that would require voters to provide a form of state-issued identification at polling places. Read more about that here.
