What started out as a morning robbery in the Northside neighborhood turned into a chase for the Chapel Hill Police Department.
Lt. Kevin Gunter, spokesman for the department, said a victim picked up someone he thought he knew and was robbed at gun point of $300.
Police then responded to the area and saw the suspect get out of the victim’s car and enter a blue Chevrolet containing two other individuals.
Officers picked up the Chevrolet near McDade street, but the car fled the scene and caused officers to pursue the suspects down Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard past Interstate 40 to Whitfield Road, Gunter said.
Gunter said the suspects then lost control of their vehicle and ran off the road in an area of kudzu. No one was injured, and police were able to take the suspects into custody without a struggle.
During the chase, Gunter said the suspects discarded a handgun out of the vehicle’s window on Short Street, but police have recovered the weapon.
Police have identified the three suspects as Demerrick Brinkley, Climmon Jefferson and Darrick Long.
Brinkley was charged with felonious speeding to elude, possession of a firearm by a felon and robbery with a dangerous weapon. His bond was set at $25,000 secured.
Jefferson was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and robbery with a dangerous weapon. His bond was set at $15,000 secured.
