Susan King, a candidate for dean of UNC’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is visiting the University for the second time today. King was the fourth and final candidate to be interviewed by the search committee charged with replacing Jean Folkerts, who stepped down today.
Bruce Carney, executive vice chancellor and provost, said he has not made a formal offer but is in talks with a candidate.
King, vice president of external affairs and director of the Journalism Initiative for the Carnegie Corporation, declined to say in an interview whether or not she had received an offer from Carney.
King said she received an invitation to visit Chapel Hill.
“I wanted to come down and understand the community a little better,” she said, adding that her first visit was tightly scheduled.
While in town, King said she might or might not visit the journalism school.
“I wouldn’t want to put anybody in an uncomfortable position,” she said.
Of the four candidates interviewed by the search committee, King offers the most professional experience, having worked for various local and national news organizations, including CBS News, where she was a correspondent for Walter Cronkite.
