After losing back-to-back conference matchups, the North Carolina football team used a balanced offense to beat Wake Forest 49-24 in Kenan Stadium on Saturday.
In the Homecoming game, redshirt sophomore quarterback Bryn Renner threw for a season-high 338 yards, while senior wide receiver Dwight Jones had six receptions for 138 yards.
On the ground, redshirt freshman Giovani Bernard – who has registered a total of 965 rushing yards this season – rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Bernard also had his first career receiving touchdown in the first quarter to put North Carolina on top early.
Bernard is the first Tar Heel since 1995 to rush for 11 touchdowns in a single season.
In stark contrast to last week’s loss to Clemson, UNC capitalized off its opponent’s mistakes. Wake Forest coughed up the ball five times, throwing four interceptions and fumbling once, and the Tar Heels scored 28 points off of turnovers.
UNC (6-3, 2-3 ACC) will play North Carolina State next week in Raleigh. The last time the Tar Heels beat the Wolfpack was a 23-9 victory in Chapel Hill.
