Eve Carson's legacy to live on through memorial 5K race

Members of the campus community will celebrate what would have been former Student Body President Eve Carson’s 26th birthday on Saturday by raising money for a cause she was passionate about.

Even though the last class to have attended UNC with Carson graduated earlier this year, her legacy lives on through events such as Saturday’s Eve Carson Memorial 5K for Education.

“What we want is for the event to be a celebration of Eve, and there’s no better day to celebrate someone than on their birthday,” said Alex Urquhart, philanthropy chairman for Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Registration and check-in for the event will begin at 7:30 a.m. in front of South Building. The race will kick off at 9:00 a.m.

Urquhart said about 1,000 people are currently registered for the race, which is comparable to previous years, and they hope to meet their goal of 1,500 registrants on race day.

“It’s been great to see such a high turnout despite the fact that the last class to be on campus with Eve graduated,” said Kara Singsank, vice president of philanthropy for Pi Beta Phi sorority.

The race is co-sponsored by Pi Beta Phi and Phi Delta Theta.

Urquhart said 60 percent of the money raised Saturday will go to the Eve Carson Scholarship fund. The remaining 40 percent will be divided between CEO 4 Teens and First Book.

“The future of the race depends not only on honoring Eve’s legacy but how we can transition to focusing on the Carolina way.”

Race day festivities include performances by the Clef Hangers and Cadence and an appearance by Student Body President Mary Cooper.

“We’re really excited to have everyone out on Saturday,” Singsank said. “It’s supposed to be a beautiful day.”
