Faculty committee talks athletic issues

Days after returning from the NCAA hearing in Indianapolis, Chancellor Holden Thorp discussed implementing the changes to academic support for student athletes at Tuesday’s faculty athletics committee meeting.

Thorp said no one enjoyed going before the NCAA Committee on Infractions regarding UNC’s alleged violations, but said he could not have chosen better representatives.

“Other than getting the ruling in January, it’s all over,” Thorp said.

Harold Woodard, associate dean of student counseling, stressed student concerns about balancing athletic and academic schedules.

Woodard said athletes have brought him concerns about conflicts between travel schedules and schoolwork.

Members agreed upon a revised list of recommendations for the athletic department based on last year’s exit interviews with student athletes.

The list covers several topics including making undergraduate research and experiential education more accessible to student athletes and streamlining advising for student athletes.

It also includes a consideration of having athletes conduct regular evaluations of coaches and making sure freshmen student athletes in particular are focused on academics.

Members discussed how exit interviews should be conducted.

Napoleon Byars, associate dean for undergraduate studies in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, said the anonymity of an online survey would be beneficial for students concerned with privacy.

But outgoing athletic director Dick Baddour was in favor of face-to-face interviews with athletes.

“This is an opportunity for us to have a discussion about the experience,” he said.

This year’s exit interviews, which are made up of a list of general questions, will begin this month.

The committee also recognized Baddour for his 45 years of service to the school.

Committee member Lissa Broome read the document detailing the committee’s gratitude for Baddour’s work.

The committee gave Baddour, whose last day of work will be Nov. 13, a standing ovation.
