UNC leads the carrier classic at half 36-25

Michigan State out-rebounded and out-hustled North Carolina for most of the first half on Friday night at the Carrier Classic.

But the Tar Heels were able to put together a strong push in the latter portion of the half to overcome their early-game shortcomings and go into halftime with a 36-25 lead.

Eight minutes into the game the Spartans had out-rebounded the Tar Heels 15-5 and held a five-point lead.

But UNC clawed back and eventually took the lead on a breakaway dunk by John Henson with five minutes left to make it 22-19. Soon after, a referee pulled Henson aside and told him to watch hanging on the rim. His reply: Well I was going forward.

Michigan State was in the double-bonus with more than four minutes left in the game, but UNC couldn’t convert its opportunities at the line. UNC went 9-for-15 from the stripe.

Video operators at the Carrier Classic told the teams they would cut the screens to black when players were at the free-throw line. However, on several occasions the live video stayed on the board.

Tyler Zeller drew three charges underneath the basket that helped the Tar Heels keep momentum during the game.

Harrison Barnes began the game making his first two baskets. Drenched with sweat just minutes into the game, Barnes has looked to attack since his opening jumper on his patented one dribble, step back.

Barnes and Henson lead the team with eight points. Henson has four rebounds and a game-high three blocks.

Michigan State’s Brandon Dawson leads the team with six points while Draymond Green already has nine rebounds.

UNC head coach Roy Williams has been dealing with another case of vertigo this weekend. Yesterday during shoot-around he began to feel it and today during the pre-game warm-up it came back. He’s not as vocal as he usually is during games because of it.

Three Tar Heels—Justin Watts, PJ Hairston and Reggie Bullock—are wearing long-sleeves underneath their jerseys. A breeze sweeping from the west and toward the UNC bench has gotten colder as the night continues and a front approaches.

Both teams are dealing with the court conditions. The damp air is producing condensation on the floor and several players have slipped during the game, including one travel called on the Spartans.
