GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After going into halftime with a 4-0 lead, the North Carolina women’s soccer team beat Baylor 5-0 in a second-round NCAA tournament match Friday at James Pressly Stadium.
Shooting on frame has been something the No. 3-seeded Tar Heels have struggled with this season, but against the Bears, accuracy wasn’t an issue.
North Carolina took 14 shots Friday, 12 of which were on goal. In the first half, UNC scored four goals off seven shots.
UNC took control of the game early when Kelly McFarlane scored her third goal of the season in the 14th minute with assists from Kealia Ohai and Crystal Dunn. Megan Brigman, Elizabeth Burchenal and Emmalie Pfankuch also recorded goals against the Bears.
With 23:50 left in the first half, Courtney Jones sent a ball into the box from the right side, and Ohai took a shot. The ball bounced around in the box then hit a Baylor defender and rolled into the goal. The own goal was UNC’s first of the season.
North Carolina will return to James Pressly Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. to take on Central Florida for a third-round NCAA tournament game.
