The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

When they’re taking campus tours, parents and students alike want to know: “Where do freshmen live on campus?” They are simultaneously surprised, impressed and excited to learn that UNC does not have “freshman-only” housing. New students have the chance — whether in living-learning communities, suites or hall-style rooms in every building from Hinton James to Carmichael to Spencer — to have unique, formative housing experiences their first year on campus.

I’m not sure that the new housing policy will increase the number of upperclassmen choosing to live on campus. I am sure, however, that I don’t look forward to having to answer this question in the future. I would encourage RHA to take note of the student response to this change. The presence of a real campus community is something that sets our university apart from many others. Let’s not fragment that community in any way without seriously consulting students first.
