The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

If the University is concerned with keeping older students on campus, the first obstacle they face that jumps to mind are the many restrictions they put on campus housing. Especially those clearly aimed at younger students who can transition more willingly into a restrictive environment which forces them to make huge lifestyle changes.

I’ll give you my own example. Speaking as an off-campus student who would prefer to be nearer to libraries, counselors and other on-campus resources, one particular rule will consistently keep me away. I have had a dog for almost five years now that I would not give up under any circumstances. In fact, I wouldn’t be here at UNC if not for my dog, who at one point pulled me through a much rougher time in my life. To ask me to give him up in order to be a part of a campus he has helped me reach is almost insulting.

Universities around the country are starting to change their pet policies, and I hope in the future UNC will understand that letting pets in doesn’t have to mean a lower standard of housing. I can hold my dog to a standard of conduct just as capably as I can hold myself to one.
