The N.C. Jaycee Burn Center celebrated Thursday the dedication of its Acute Burn and Wound Unit, which added 15 beds for a total of 36 at the center.
About 15 people attended the ceremony — which was held in the new unit — including Chancellor Holden Thorp.
Located on the fifth floor of the N.C. Children’s Hospital, the unit opened in May but only recently received all of its equipment and personnel, said Brooke Curro, director of the unit.
Dr. Bruce Cairns, medical director of the center, said the unit allows the center to consolidate into one location, which increases efficiency.
“This is the most modern floor of the hospital,” he said.
The center is the only place in the hospital where adults and children are in the same unit, which requires intensive cross training for the staff, he added.
Attendees included representatives from North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives, which donated more than $1 million to the unit, said Dale Lambert, chief executive officer of the Randolph Electric Membership Corporation.
He said the group plans to donate another half a million dollars to the center during the next five years.
Companies in the group also helped fund the original Jaycee Burn Center, he added.
