Concerned parents of students at Frank Porter Graham and Mary Scroggs Elementary Schools will attend the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System Board of Education meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel Hill Town Hall.
At the meeting, the board will receive the final report and recommendation on the Chinese and Spanish dual-language programs. The board will vote on whether to approve the report June 7.
The report recommends for the Spanish dual-language program to move from Scroggs to Frank Porter Graham, which will then be converted from a neighborhood school to a magnet school.
School officials have said that creating a magnet school and expanding the Spanish dual-language program at other schools will fix the program’s major issues.
About 50 percent of parents from Frank Porter Graham, and 70 percent from Scroggs said they did not want the Spanish dual-language program to move.
Kathy Irvin, a parent whose children attend Frank Porter Graham, said many unhappy parents at her elementary school and at Scroggs will voice their concerns about the report.
“We’re expecting over 100 people there,” Irvin said.
She said she felt the report does not have enough information for the changes it recommends.
“If you’re going to do something as large as creating a dual-language magnet school, it really needs to be a thoughtful, mindful decision,” Irvin said. “It’s not going to help anyone to do something in a half-baked way.”
