A report released by the University’s Faculty Executive Committee Thursday implicates athletic department advisors in helping student-athletes sign up for fraudulent courses in the African and Afro-American studies department.
The report was released after a faculty subcommittee completed its review of the investigation UNC conducted into the department. The University’s original report was released in May.
The latest report cites the absence of systematic or regular communication between the athletic department and the University faculty as a whole but found no errors in any of the official reports the subcommittee reviewed.
The subcommittee found that student-athletes likely receive most of their academic advising from members of the athletic department who are not formally authorized to give such advice. According to the report it is possible that members of the athletic department staff have directed athletes to questionable classes in other departments.
