The work-related cellphone records of former head football coach Butch Davis were released today in conjunction with the long-running lawsuit filed by a media coalition that includes The Daily Tar Heel.
The 136-page document covers the period of March 2009 through November 2010.
According to a statement from Jon Sasser, an attorney representing Davis, Davis had five phone calls in that period with Jennifer Wiley, the former UNC tutor found to have given impermissible academic assistance to some football players.
Four of those calls were related to the private tutelage of Davis’ son, Drew Davis, according to the statement. The final call, in August 2010, was made by Wiley to Davis after Wiley was asked to meet with UNC administrators and was concerned.
“She was concerned, and asked him what the meeting was about, who would be present, and whether she should bring her father,” the statement reads. “Coach Davis, who did not know the answers to these questions, suggested that Ms. Wiley contact a senior administration official. At the conclusion of their call, Coach Davis believed that she would be attending the meeting.”
On Aug. 26, 2010, the University announced that a former tutor, later identified as Wiley, had been found to have given impermissible academic assistance to players.
