On a chilly Friday night, Hillsborough opened the holiday season with caroling and the annual Lighting of the Town Tree on the lawn of the Old Courthouse.

The Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce hosted the event, kicking off the Historic Hillsborough Holiday Weekend — which also included the Hillsborough Holiday Parade and the 26th Annual Hillsborough Candlelight Home Tour.

About 150 residents of Hillsborough eagerly awaited the lighting of the Town Tree and the start of a weekend full of events geared toward serving the local community.

The Orange Community Players, a Hillsborough musical and theatrical group, led the lighting ceremony.

The group invited attendees to join them in caroling around the Town Tree and listening to various Christmas stories.

Carolyn Allen, a member of the players, was excited to be involved with the tree lighting ceremony for the second time.

Allen said the event’s attendance doubled since last year and she felt that it was a great local event.

“Our group has just finished up our Christmas play and has been looking forward to caroling at this tree lighting,” Allen said.

Anthony Doll, a Hillsborough resident, said this was his first time attending the lighting ceremony.

Doll said he was glad to see a high turnout of residents who cared about the event.

“This event revolves around being more involved in the community,” said Doll.

The tree lighting ceremony accompanied several other community events, including the Hillsborough Arts Council’s Last Friday Art Walk, which occurred near the Town Tree.

Bob Plunket, a Hillsborough resident, also attended the tree lighting for the first time.

He said he hoped the event would become a family tradition for his wife and young son.

“We have never been before, and we wanted to come for my son. We want to create new traditions as a family,” Plunket said.
