A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Franklin and Columbia Streets shortly after 6 p.m. Monday.
Jarod Leech, who witnessed the accident, said he saw the victim taken away in an ambulance. Leech estimated the driver struck the victim at a speed of 30 mph.
“So I saw a guy coming across the road … while there was a green light on Franklin,” Leech said. “So he’s not in the cross walk, he’s a decent ways away from it.”
He said the collision was loud and fast.
“I saw his body like go flying like above the car,” he said. “I think he flew up and then came down on the windshield and rolled off right there.”
Leech said the car stopped after hitting the pedestrian.
Police could not release the victim’s identity or confirm the severity of his injuries.
“All I can give you is that we’ve had a motor vehicle collision with an injury,” said Sgt. Gabriel Shinn of the Chapel Hill Police Department.
Police would not confirm that the victim was taken to the hospital, but traffic in the area was blocked off.
